GAYA: Police, late on Sunday evening raided the town’s centuries old red light area in the infamous Sarai locality of the town. Altogether 16 sex workers alongwith a dozen clients were nabbed virtually caught red handed indulging in flesh trade. The red light area is located at a stone through distance from the Kotwali Police station of the town.

Confirming the raids Gaya SSP Garima Malik said that a Delhi based NGO was being approached for the rehabilitation of the sex workers. The clients of the sex workers have been forwarded to judicial custody. Some of the arrested sex workers told the police that they are in the flesh trade for generations and the nabbed sex workers include a mother daughter duo.The SSP said that the two main culprits running the sex racket in the town are absconding and raids were being conducted to apprehend the main culprits. The last time the Gaya red light area hit the headlines was in the year 1995 when Punjab Police jawans deputed to conduct election in the Seshan era vandalised the area causing panic among the sex workers.The flesh trade in the town is mostly conducted in the guise of music as the sex workers present themselves as singers and dancers. The red light area women are also hired to present item songs at marriage parties, mostly in the villages. The Maoists have banned dance performance by sex workers, earlier known as ‘Tawaifs’ during marriage and other social functions in the areas of their influence including Dumaria-Imamganj region of Gaya district.
